Root canals in Colombia are an affordable option for those seeking dental care. On average, root canal treatments can cost up to 70% less than in the United States and Canada making it an accessible way to maintain healthy teeth.

What is a root canal?

A root canal is a treatment used to repair and save a tooth that is decayed or infected. During a root canal procedure, the nerve and pulp are removed and the inside of the tooth is cleaned and sealed. Without treatment, the tissue surrounding the tooth will become infected and abscesses may form.

The root canal is used to describe the natural cavity in the center of the tooth. The pulp or pulp chamber is the soft area within the root canal. The tooth's nerve lies within the root canal.

A tooth's nerve is not vitally important to a tooth's health and function after the tooth has emerged through the gums. Its only function is to provide the sensation of hot or cold. The presence or absence of a nerve will not affect the day-to-day functioning of the tooth.

How long will I have to be in Colombia for my root canal?

Root canals can be done in 1-2 hours. However, If you are getting the full treatment, which includes the post, core, and crown, you will have to come back 5-7 days later for a second appointment. This time is needed for the lab to custom-create your crown.

How successful are root canals?

Root canal treatments are highly successful. The procedure has more than a 95% success rate.

What happens during a root canal?

We will examine the x-ray and the tooth, then administer a local anesthetic.

After the tooth is numbed, a small protective sheet (called a dental rubber dam) is placed to isolate the tooth.

An opening will be made in the crown of the tooth and small instruments will be used to clean the canals and to shape the canal spaces for filling.

Once the canals have been adequately cleaned and shaped, the canals will then be filled with a polyester synthetic root canal filling and sealer.

A temporary filling is then placed to close the opening. Your dentist will remove the temporary filling before the tooth is restored.

Why does tooth pulp need to be removed during a root canal?

When a tooth's nerve tissue or pulp is damaged, it breaks down and bacteria begin to multiply within the pulp chamber. The bacteria and other decayed debris can cause an infection or abscessed tooth.

An abscess is a pus-filled pocket that forms at the end of the roots of the tooth. An abscess occurs when the infection spreads all the way past the ends of the roots of the tooth.

Will I need a crown after my root canal?

Most posterior teeth (molars and premolars) will require a crown on the tooth following treatment to return strength to the tooth. If you already have a crown, the crown can often be saved and restored with a tooth-coloured filling after treatment.

How painful is a root canal?

Your tooth may feel sensitive for a few days, but any discomfort can usually be relieved with over-the-counter pain medication or anti-inflammatories.
